Class Time: Sunday 14:30-16: 30 OR 16:30-18:30 (The actual time is subject to final admissions status)

Class Venue: Hong Kong Pui Ching Middle School & San Po Kong Victorius Factory Building

Quota: 10-12 students per class, 2 classes

Programme Fee: $3,600 (pay after admission)

  • Tutors include: Lui Ngao-Yuen, Siu Hin Chuen, Almond Yeung,Eason YH Chan, local guest tutors and overseas guest tutors
  • Class content will include an introduction to jazz harmony and rhythm, practice methods of jazz scales and arpeggios, research on different styles of jazz repertoire, improvisation methods and band ensembles, etc.
  • Class language is mainly Cantonese, supplemented by English teaching
Rehearsal Fee: $900  (pay in MAR 2025)
  • Students who have completed the course are invited to perform at the anniversary concert on 5 May, 2025. There will be a total of four rehearsals.
  • Rehearsal date and location: 28/4, 1/5, 3/5, 5/5 @TWTH
  • Rehearsal time: 14:00-16:00 or 16:00-18:00 (time depends on actual situation)
  • Rehearsals on 28/4 and 1/5 will be guided by local instructors
    Rehearsals on 3/5 and 5/5 will be guided by overseas visiting artist Johnanthon Katz
  • The rehearsal will be held on the stage of Tsuen Wan Town Hall with a professional sound team
  • The fee covers venue rental, instructor guidance, sound and musical instrument rental, and performance-related production and administrative support.
Class Details

The course will be divided into three units:

Unit 1
Explain the basic harmony and rhythmic patterns of jazz, such as the practice methods and uses of 7th Chords and various scales; rhythmic patterns such as Swing, Bossa Nova and Jazz Funk, and also explain basic improvisation methods and principles. , rhythm application, etc.; The tutors will select some introductory jazz standards for analysis and explanation, and guide students to put the theory and practice into actual performance.

Unit 2
Based on a 5-6 member band, we will explain each member’s musical responsibility, the relationship between each instrument, and learn how to play a jazz standard; The tutors will provide appropriate guidance based on the student’s performance, and provide practice methods and classic jazz recordings for reference and study.

Unit 3
The tutors will guide the students to select the annual concert repertoire, analyze the song structure and performance key points with the students, and provide some basic arrangement techniques to guide the students to use their creativity and imagination. The theories and techniques learned will be used through a series of band rehearsals , put into practice in the performance of the anuual concert.

Remarks:

  • Workshops are conducted mainly in Cantonese, supplemented by English.

Audition Details

Applicants are needed to attend the audition on September 22. Former HKYJC students do not need to participate in the audition.

Date: September 22 (Sunday)
Time: 16:00-18:00 (TBC)
Location: A5, 11/F, Block AB, Victorius Factory Building, San Po Kong
Content: Prepare a Jazz Standard, prepare your own accompaniment to play and answer simple questions

1. Candidates are required to prepare a jazz standard of their own choice.
2. You will be asked to play along with your backing track.
3. Your performance should include the melody of the song and improvisation over the chord changes.
4. The backing track should be 3 to 4 mins in length.
5. 8upright piano, jazz drums, double bass, guitar speakers, bass speakers, microphones, music stands and amplification systems will be provided.
